If you have fungal acne, you might be familiar with the whole routine of looking through ingredient lists to ensure that there are no unsafe ingredients for fungal acne in the mix. Fungal acne is a skin condition that can make you become really wary of what you put on your skin so that you won’t worsen the condition by mistake.
To better understand why you have to be careful, you must know what exactly fungal acne is.
What is fungal acne?
We’ve already gone over fungal acne in great detail, but in a nutshell, fungal acne is acne caused by a fungus (Malassezia). You can learn more about fungal acne right here.
What is Gylcerin?
Glycerin is a widely used ingredient in cosmetics and skincare. You’ll have a hard time finding a product that doesn’t contain glycerin.
Glycerin, also known as glycerine or glycerol, is a clear, odorless, and colorless liquid naturally present in both plant and animal fats but is chemically derived from soybeans or sugarcane.
But what is glycerin exactly?
In skincare, glycerin is considered a humectant, a skincare agent that deeply hydrates the skin layers by pulling moisture/water from the atmosphere onto the skin to moisturize it.
If there’s not enough moisture in the air, glycerin will draw moisture from the deeper layers of the skin to the outmost layer (the stratum corneum).
Glycerin is a simple polyol compound that has been shown to have powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Because of these properties, it is a popular FDA-approved ingredient for treating minor burns and wounds.
Glycerin’s antifungal properties may also help to relieve the symptoms of fungal acne. [1]
Although glycerin is a very tolerable ingredient, there is a lot of conflicting information regarding its safety, with some material and information online claiming that glycerin is an unsafe ingredient for fungal acne.
In a previous article, we explored the subject and discovered some surprising facts about this ingredient. If you’re interested in the safety of using Glycerin on fungal acne, we’ve done some research that you might find helpful. Can Glycerin be Used Safely on Fungal Acne?
Why should you go glycerin-free in your skincare routine?
Those with hyperactive skin and glycerin allergies would do well to adopt a skincare routine that does not contain products formulated with glycerin.
Here’s why.
Although genuine glycerin allergies are rare, they do happen. Unfortunately, misinformation carried by some apps and websites has led people to believe that glycerin is bad for fungal acne.
We at Folliculitis Scout maintain that, apart from allergies, there is no definitive evidence that proves that glycerin can trigger or exacerbate fungal acne.
However, there are some not-so-positive things that glycerin can do.
*It can lead to or aggravate dry skin.
As mentioned earlier, glycerin is a humectant. This means that it pulls moisture from the atmosphere and binds it to the skin.
However, when the humidity in the atmosphere is low, glycerin will pull moisture from the deeper levels of the skin to the upper layers.
This can cause the skin to become dry. If you have dry skin naturally, it may aggravate the symptoms.
*It can irritate the skin.
If you notice your skin burns, stings, becomes red, or forms a rash after applying a product containing glycerin, then you may be allergic to glycerin or the product.
A patch test with pure kosher glycerin could be used to confirm that it is glycerin that is causing your problems. Just make sure you use distilled water to dilute it properly first before applying it to the skin.
Some people are naturally allergic to glycerin, and they often display more exaggerated signs of an allergy after using a glycerin-based product.
If this happens, discontinue the use of the product and contact your healthcare provider. You can also take a look at the glycerin-free product alternatives outlined below.
Top glycerin alternatives
On the occasion that an individual is allergic to glycerin or that glycerin leads to clogged pores, skin irritation, or more frequent acne breakouts, It is best to use skincare products that contain ingredients that perform the same functions as glycerin.
The most popular humectant asides glycerin is hyaluronic acid, which is a clear, gel-like substance found naturally in the skin, eyes, and connective tissue in the body. It is widely known to hold 1,000 times its weight in water which makes it extremely hydrating.
Just like glycerin, there aren’t many reports of people reacting negatively to hyaluronic acid as it is generally a tolerable ingredient.
Other less popular, but equally as effective, glycerin alternatives include:
- Sorbitol
- Urea
- Collagen
- Propylene Glycol
- Panthenol
- Butylene Glycol
- AHAs
Updated list of Glycerin-free, fungal acne safe products:
