Ingredient Notes
Trihydroxystearin is made from hydrogenated castor oil and is used to thicken oils and silicones into a gel. It is a triglyceride, which is what plant oils are made of, so we count it as an oil. Its fatty acid is 12-hydroxystearic acid, a C18 fatty acid with an extra hydroxyl group. Dobler and colleagues (2019) found no Malassezia growth on a close relative of it, but warned that this result should not be applied to other hydroxy fatty acid esters. Until it is tested directly we keep the caution, so avoid it if you are prone to fungal acne.
